Richard Faulkner - Director

Richard Faulkner Alexander Accountancy Burton 291

Burton-born Richard began his journey with Alexander Accountancy on a part-time basis in 2013, joining full-time in 2015.

What a lot of people won’t appreciate is just how impressive it has been to watch how quickly Richard has risen through the ranks and we’re proud that he was appointed and welcomed as a Shareholder and Director of Alexander Accountancy in April 2020. All of this has been

achieved only five years after he joined the business as a trainee following a career change, and in which time he completed his Association of Accounting Technician exams in a matter of months.

For many people there will appear to be a lack of experience for someone at this level, but he has joined me, David Alexander, and Wayne Penlington his fellow Director who have 75 years’ experience between us, and will be sharing our knowledge and experience with him.

One great benefit is that Richard has not brought any baggage with him so has willingly immersed himself in the culture of Alexander Accountancy. A firm built on the ethics of looking after those around us, and that means contacts, customers, employees and suppliers. Richard now exemplifies this commitment as well as if not better than any other member of the team.

It is also a pleasure to work with someone that really buys into the team ethic, is polite, courteous, caring, fiercely loyal and never gives less than 100% in everything he does.

But none of this should really come as a surprise. In his younger days Richard was a keen footballer and driven to rise as far through the ranks as possible. He progressed through the local leagues, played for a couple of very local non-league clubs, and was eventually taken on by one of England’s top 6 professional clubs.

Richard has brought that professionalism and drive into his career development; I rate him as someone you can really be proud to have on your side and who you want to have in your team. So well done Richard and welcome to the Board.

Richard’s Accountancy Tip: “Always know where you want to get to, so your accountant can maximise your income to help you get there.”

David Alexander - Chief Executive Officer

David AlexanderDavid, born and bred in Burton-upon-Trent, has come full-circle to return to his roots after living in the Potteries. He’s responsible for leading the business, developing the strategy and setting the tone for Alexander Accountancy’s corporate culture. Aside from this, he assures us that he also has to do some work…

Having originally trained in industry, David became the company accountant at a foundry which employed over 150 workers. Following that, he trained and worked as an Independent Financial Adviser in a firm where he also worked to start their accounts department. From there, David took the bold decision to strike out on his own as a sole accountant. He’s never looked back since.

David’s drive to succeed has been a key factor in Alexander Accountancy’s success – but he’s no stranger to taking on big challenges. David has climbed to the summit of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro three times and in 2005, he helped his wife Gail to reach the top. As Gail is registered disabled, it’s what he describes as his most satisfying achievement. With the mountain peak sitting 5,895 metres above sea-level, it’s a fantastic feat for them both.

Hill walking and trekking are major passions for David and Gail, and they’re never happier than when outdoors gardening or in the company of the various dogs that they have owned. They currently own a border collie and are fostering a second dog.

David’s Accountancy Tip: “Ignore the bar room experts and listen to the professionals. A good accountant should be seen as a business adviser who will earn or save you a lot more than they cost. We know the best ways to push the limits without crossing the line.”

Wayne Penlington - Director

Wayne PenlingtonBurton-born Wayne Penlington has been with Alexander Accountancy since 2009 and is never happier than when dealing with local firms and advising small businesses on how they can improve their financial performance.

Wayne thrives on joining up with clients to become part of their team and work with them and he brings a great deal of experience to the table for them to benefit from: 15 years in practice alongside 10 years of working in industry. That time spent at the coalface of business helps Wayne to properly understand and appreciate the pressures and demands that come from running a business.

He also managed to qualify as an FCCA accountant at the early age of 23 without having to retake a year – so it’s fair to say that our Wayne knows his stuff!

When not at work, Wayne likes to unwind in the company of his wife and 2 young children and can regularly be found indulging his passion for crown green bowls.

Wayne’s Accountancy Tip: “Every business, no matter its size, should set targets and then monitor performance against them on a regular basis. This will allow them to make timely decisions that will improve their performance and give them a better chance to achieve their targets.”

Tracey Faulkner - Bookkeeper

Tracey Faulkner

Tracey, a Burton girl through and through, is responsible for the bookkeeping, payroll, CIS tax, VAT returns and accounts preparation for the ever-growing Alexander Accountancy client-base. She liaises with clients both over the phone and in person and really enjoys that aspect of her job.

Tracey joined the team in September 2013. Originally filling what was then a 3 –week temporary role, Tracey really impressed with her skills, patience and hard-working attitude, or as she herself jokingly puts it “they’ve not been able to get rid of me since!”

However there’s a great deal more to Tracey than that. With a fantastic level of experience in management, administration and all aspects of bookkeeping and credit control that stretches back over 25 years, Tracey is a vital part of what Alexander Accountancy does and she’s now working her way through the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers qualifications.

Outside of work, Tracey’s focus is very much on her family; her husband Richard and daughters Amy and Beth are at the heart of all she does, and she loves getting together with her friends whenever possible too.

Tracey’s Accountancy Tip: “Keep organised and up to date. An accountant with a pro-active rather than a re-active approach is a must.”
