Sole traders and landlords can hear about the changes being made to tax assessment through the Government’s Making Tax Digital switch at an Alexander Accountancy event in December.

On December 3, Alexander Accountancy will offer practical advice on compliance for the new regime coming into force from April, which requires sole traders and landlords to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates.

The session, which will take place at The Pirelli Stadium, Burton-on-Trent, will be free for Alexander Accountancy clients, or £15.00 plus the Eventbrite fee for other attendees.

Significant changes to tax reporting will affect sole traders and landlords under the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment programme, which will require businesses and landlords to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.

The changes roll out in phases with those with qualifying income over £50,000 having to comply from April 2026, while those earning over £30,000 follow from April 2027.

The Government launched Making Tax Digital to reduce tax errors and improve productivity, in response to errors contributing to a £5 billion tax gap among self-assessment businesses.

The switch to digital record-keeping has, the Government reports, minimised mistakes and reduced administrative time, with other benefits including fewer unintentional errors, streamlined year-end returns and less time managing paperwork.

Significant change

HMRC will also provide more tailored support based on digital submissions.

Alexander Accountancy Chairman David Alexander said: “The changes being introduced through Making Tax Digital represent some of the most significant alterations in generations to the submissions by sole traders and landlords.

“The first tranche of changes come into force in April, which is not far away, so Alexander Accountancy is ready to help you transition smoothly to compliant software to ensure your records meet the new requirements before the deadlines.

“Our clients can attend the December event for free, while guests can access the specialist advice by paying to attend.

“It is important to be prepared for the Maxing Tax Digital switch so we encourage anyone unsure about the impact to get in touch.”

The Making Tax Digital event is being held as part of Alexander Accountancy’s drive to actively foster local connections through regular networking and information events, creating valuable opportunities for clients while strengthening the regional business community.
