Amber joined the team at Alexander Accountancy two years ago.
What drew you to accountancy?
I’ve always been good with numbers, so a career in accounting was an obvious choice! I started out as a payroll apprentice when I was 17, and after that I became a Senior Payroll officer. Now, I’m in charge of our client’s payroll schemes – I handle everything from the initial set-up to processing monthly, fortnightly or weekly payment runs and keeping on top of pension compliance.
What do you enjoy most about your role at the firm?
It’s a very warm and friendly team environment and we all support each other, which I think is especially important during the busiest periods the annual end-of-year accounts.
Is there a professional achievement or qualification you are particularly proud of?
I was really proud to achieve my foundation degree in payroll management in 2020.
Outside of work, what hobbies or interests keep you busy?
I really enjoy festivals and live music. This year I went to Glastonbury and saw Pulp and Alanis Morissette, which was amazing. I also enjoy going to smaller gigs in Birmingham and Derby.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their career with Alexander Accountancy?
Don’t panic. In very busy times like the last Friday of every month when most people get paid, it’s easy to go into a bit of a panic, but it’s never quite as bad as you think it is. Keeping a calm head is one of the most important qualities for accounting.
